The roundtable explored the multifaceted dimensions of open science, particularly within the context of evolving legal frameworks. Throughout the dialogue, attendees delved into various themes, including the complexities of legal dimensions in open science, concerns over excessive bureaucratization, and the potential misuse of AI technology.
A key highlight was the emphasis on establishing a robust public infrastructure with sustainable resources and governance, with specific attention to data stewardship and long-term storage. Participants recognised the importance of comprehensive legal frameworks to provide researchers with clear guidance while instilling public trust in scientific outcomes.
Moreover, discussions underscored the dual role of digital technology as both an enabler and determinant in the realm of Open Science. By navigating the nuanced legal intricacies of digital research approaches, the event aimed to foster a transparent, inclusive, and legally consistent framework for open science.
With this roundtable discussion we hope to have facilitated a deeper understanding and endorsement of Open Science within the legal academic community, paving the way for a more transparent and accessible research landscape. Furthermore, the roundtable served as research material for a report that was published in October 2023 by my colleague Žiga Škorjanc for the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Research: Analyse der Rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen für Open Science in Österreich (PDF).
